About Us
In the early 80s, Maria and Dennis joined forces with some like-minded, back-to-the-land gardeners and activists to form Spiral Garden community just outside Woodville. Although new to the Market, we’ve been shiitake growers for over 10 years, using logs from our six acres of pine flatwoods. When shiitake season ends, we’ll list fresh herbs and greens, and fruiting pineapple plants from time to time.
Practices
Following organic standards (not certified), our shiitakes are grown on wild oak or cherry logs using zero pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Decayed logs (after 3-4 years of production) add organic matter to our garden beds. Our gardens are naturally amended with fish emulsion, composted chicken manure, and Espoma products. Micro-irrigation systems conserve water during dry spells.
