84 West Farm is a small, but diverse family farm in northern Jefferson County. Like many small farms, we started with a handful of chickens and a desire to feed our family better quality food that was raised ethically. Over the years our farm has grown to include raising free range chickens and ducks for eggs, pastured pork, pastured meat chickens, and a small herd of Brown Swiss dairy cows. We also enjoy gardening, growing fruit trees, and foraging for native berries which are abundant in the area. We love talking to others about homesteading and recently started a business providing equipment and services to other small farms/homesteads in the area.
Practices
All our livestock are fed non-GMO, soy-free feeds from a family-owned mill in Pennsylvania. We never use herbicides or pesticides on our property and only use organic fertilizers and compost made from the waste generated by our livestock. We agree with Michael Pollan that, we are what what we eat eats. Therefore, we strive to feed quality feeds and be good stewards of our land. We want our animals to live as their nature dictates, so our cattle graze on pasture and our poultry free-range those same pastures.
